Bellaire, Antrim County’s county seat, sits in the middle of the Chain of Lakes with older village homes and lake cottages all around. Revive Exteriors installs roofs, siding and windows that handle inland snowbelt winters.
Bellaire began as a post office called Keno in 1879, took its current name in 1880 and incorporated in 1891, the same year the railroad depot opened. A wooden bowl factory came for the rail access. Today the historic Antrim County Courthouse anchors downtown, and the Chain of Lakes, including Torch Lake, Michigan’s deepest inland lake, surrounds it.
Bellaire’s homes are old: census estimates put the median home at about 1970, with about 72% built before 1980 and roughly one in five before 1940. Around the lakes, many homes started as small cottages and were added onto over the years, which often means several rooflines and tricky joints.
Bellaire is inland and has no weather station of its own. The closest comparable one, in Kalkaska, averages about 132 inches of snow a year with January lows around 11°F. That’s more snow than the bay towns.
Deep, long-lasting snow on older roofs means ice dams and valley leaks, especially where additions meet the original house.
