From century-old homes in the village to newer houses on the hills above the bay, Revive Exteriors helps Suttons Bay homeowners with roofs, siding and windows built for Leelanau winters.
Suttons Bay was founded in 1854 and named for Harry C. Sutton, who came to cut fuel wood for passing steamboats. The village incorporated in 1898 and the railroad arrived in 1903. Cherry orchards and vineyards still surround it, and St. Joseph Avenue still has buildings like Bahles, which opened in 1876.
In the village, census estimates show about 42% of homes were built before 1980 and roughly one in seven before 1940. The township around it is newer, with a median home built around 1992, after a building boom in the 2000s. Many homes in both are seasonal: about a third of the village’s homes are second homes.
Suttons Bay faces an inlet of the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay. Homes on the hillsides above the water take wind off the bay, while village homes deal with tight lots and big shade trees.
The Traverse City area averages about 101 inches of snow a year, with January lows around 17°F. Snow piles up for months on the peninsula, and ice dams are common on older village homes.
