Acme Township runs from the East Arm of Grand Traverse Bay out through cherry orchards and neighborhoods like Holiday Hills. Revive Exteriors helps Acme homeowners replace aging roofs, siding and windows, with a free inspection to start.
Acme began as a post office called Whitewater in 1857 and was renamed Acme in 1869. The railroad to Petoskey came through in 1892, and the township grew into cherry country, with the suburban Holiday Hills area to the southwest and the Grand Traverse Resort tower rising in 1986.
The 1970s were Acme’s biggest building decade: census estimates show about 630 homes from that era, and about 40% of all homes were built before 1980. A lot of those homes are on their second roof now, and many still have original windows and siding. The 2000s added several hundred newer homes, many of which are reaching the age when the first roof starts to wear.
Homes along the East Bay shoreline take wind straight off the water, while orchard-country homes inland sit open to wind across farmland. Either way, shingle edges and ridges take a beating in spring and fall storms.
The Traverse City area averages about 101 inches of snow a year, with January lows around 17°F, so ice dams are a common problem on homes with older attic insulation.
